Matthew has a dual degree of history and agriculture from Tennessee Tech, and obtained his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law.

Matthew is a member of the Order of Barristers, serves as a member of the Agricultural Foundation for Tennessee Tech University, and is a member of the board of directors for TennGreen serving as East Tennessee Vice-President. Matthew is an award-winning national debater and the 2025 recipient of the Tennessee Tech Alumni Association's Outstanding Young Alumnus Award.

Personal History and Pasttimes:

Matthew is a proud native born Tennessean and the third generation to live on his family’s farm. His roots trace back to his ancestor and the first governor of the state of Tennessee, John Sevier.

He and his lovely wife Lauren are the proud parents of Adam Claude McClanahan, and the family enjoys exploring the outdoors in their local community, dubbed “the waterfall capital of the U.S.”
